How Often Should Trees Be Trimmed? — Maintenance Schedule Guide

📅 June 30, 2025⏱ 6 min read✍️ Jimmy's Tree Experts Team

Tree trimming frequency is one of the most common questions homeowners across Burlington County ask our team. The honest answer: it depends. Species, tree age, location, purpose of trimming, and the presence of hazards all influence the recommended schedule. This guide gives you practical trimming intervals for South Jersey's most common trees.

General Trimming Frequency by Tree Type

Young Trees (under 10 years): Every 1–2 Years

Young trees benefit from formative structural pruning more frequently than mature specimens. Annual or biennial trimming in the first 5–10 years trains the tree to develop strong branch architecture, preventing costly structural problems later. Removing co-dominant leaders, crossing branches, and poor branch angles early costs very little compared to removing a poorly structured mature tree.

Mature Shade Trees (oaks, maples, ashes): Every 3–5 Years

Healthy, mature hardwoods in Burlington County — oaks, maples, elms, sweetgums — typically need professional trimming every 3–5 years. This schedule maintains clearance from structures and utilities, removes developing deadwood before it becomes hazardous, and keeps the tree's health in check. Trees closer to structures or in high-traffic areas warrant the shorter 3-year interval.

Fruit Trees: Annually

Apple, pear, cherry, and other fruit trees should be trimmed annually — ideally in late winter before bud break. Annual pruning maintains productive fruiting wood, prevents disease pressure from interior congestion, and manages tree size. Skipping even 2–3 years of pruning on fruit trees results in significantly reduced fruit production and increased disease problems.

Flowering Ornamental Trees: Every 2–3 Years

Dogwoods, Japanese maples, serviceberries, and similar ornamentals generally need trimming every 2–3 years to maintain their aesthetic form and remove any dieback. Many of these species resent heavy pruning — light, targeted cuts every few years are far better than infrequent aggressive shaping.

Fast-Growing Trees (silver maple, poplar, willow): Annually to Every 2 Years

Fast-growing species produce more wood each year and develop hazardous deadwood, crossing branches, and structural problems more quickly. Silver maples and weeping willows in South Jersey should be professionally assessed and trimmed every 1–2 years to manage their aggressive growth and reduce storm damage risk.

Evergreens (pine, spruce, arborvitae): Every 3–5 Years

Most evergreens require less frequent trimming than deciduous trees. Pines and spruces need crown raising and deadwood removal every 3–5 years. Arborvitae and yew used as hedges may need annual shaping, but specimen trees require much less frequent attention.

Additional Triggers for Unscheduled Trimming

Beyond scheduled maintenance, trimming is warranted immediately when: branches are within 10 feet of utility lines; limbs overhang the roofline or gutters; dead branches become visible; storm damage creates hanging or split branches; the tree is interfering with lighting or sightlines; or new branches are encroaching on neighboring properties.

The Cost of Not Trimming

Trees that go untrimmed for extended periods accumulate deadwood, develop structural defects, and become significantly more expensive — and dangerous — to work on. Regular trimming on schedule is far less costly than emergency removal after a structural failure. A 5-year maintenance program almost always costs less than a single emergency removal on the same tree.
