New Jersey experiences some of the most varied and severe weather in the northeastern United States — from summer thunderstorms and tropical storms to nor'easters, ice storms, and heavy snow. At Jimmy's Tree Experts LLC, we respond to storm damage throughout Burlington County and South Jersey every year. Here's what we've learned about preventing tree-related storm damage before it happens.
Why Tree Maintenance Is Your Best Storm Defense
A structurally sound, well-maintained tree can withstand remarkable wind loads. The trees most likely to fail in a storm are those with pre-existing conditions: dead branches, decayed trunks, co-dominant stems with included bark, and shallow root systems stressed by drought or soil compaction. Most post-storm tree damage is preventable with proper pre-storm maintenance.
Pre-Storm Action #1: Annual Professional Inspection
The most important thing you can do is have a licensed arborist inspect your significant trees every 1–2 years. A professional will identify decay, structural defects, and hazardous deadwood before they become emergency situations. A $150–$300 inspection can prevent thousands in storm damage. For trees within falling distance of your home, this is not optional — it's essential risk management.
Pre-Storm Action #2: Strategic Pruning
Several pruning practices directly reduce storm damage risk: Crown thinning removes interior branches to let wind pass through the canopy rather than push it. Removing deadwood eliminates branches that will break and become projectiles in any significant wind event. Removing co-dominant leaders with included bark eliminates the tree's most common structural failure point. Crown raising removes the lowest limbs that are most likely to strike structures in a downswing.
Pre-Storm Action #3: Cable and Brace High-Risk Structures
Trees with co-dominant stems, heavy overextended limbs, or previous structural repairs can be stabilized with arborist-installed cabling and bracing systems. These systems don't guarantee against failure but significantly reduce the risk of catastrophic splitting in major storms. Cabling is a cost-effective alternative to removing otherwise healthy trees that have structural vulnerabilities.
Species to Watch Closely Before Storm Season
- Silver maple — brittle wood, fast-growing, prone to limb drop
- Bradford pear — extremely poor branch structure, splits at the crotch
- White pine — shallow roots, susceptible to windthrow in saturated soils
- American elm (if not the disease-resistant cultivar) — Dutch elm disease creates millions of failing trees
- Any tree leaning toward a structure or within its height of a target
- Ash trees affected by Emerald Ash Borer — rapid wood deterioration after death
What to Do in the 48 Hours Before a Major Storm
When a significant storm is forecast for South Jersey (tropical storm, Category 1+ hurricane, major nor'easter): Walk your property and look for any hanging branches you hadn't noticed; move outdoor furniture, vehicles, and valuables away from the tree canopy; if a professional previously identified a high-risk limb and deferred removal — reconsider that deferral; clear gutters and drains so falling debris doesn't block water flow; and know your emergency tree service contacts (save Jimmy's Tree Experts LLC number: (609) 556-3010).
After the Storm: What to Do
Inspect from a safe distance — don't walk under or near trees that have been damaged until a professional has cleared them as safe. Hanging branches are extremely dangerous (the "widow maker" risk is at its highest after a storm dislodges them). If a tree has fallen on your structure, DO NOT enter the structure until it has been inspected by both a tree professional and a building inspector. Document everything photographically for insurance purposes.
